Whispers of Trees by Ben Woodard #BookReview

whispers of trees

Whispers of Trees is an adventure for Declan and his family. As he tries to find his pesky, irritating brother, Colin he learns a lot about himself as well. This book talks about anger, shouting, empathy and just listening to the other guy. The trees are talking to us, are we listening.

A lady who looks and talks like a witch with technology, trees who seems to wake up and beckon and parent that are unsure what they should do to save their son. This book made me sit up and read nonstop. I was eager to know what actually happened to Colin? Even though they said there were no wolves but what if they were? What do the ancient trees want to tell Declan, have they harmed Colin or are they misleading the brothers? Ben has managed to maintain the mystery, suspense, and intrigue until the end in Whispers of Trees.

I found the book, Whispers of Trees a fast-paced, well-written book. I would have liked a bit more information about the parents and their relationship and why the father and Colin were so angry. He did touch upon it briefly, though. The author tied up all the different theories and the descriptions of the trees made me feel as if I was walking along with Declan. The visual imagery is very strong as well as the myth that is explored in the book.

It is a simple story, one the children will follow quite well and learn from too. Mrs. O’Leary was an interesting character eliciting the just the right blend of fear and curiosity from the family. Ben Woodard has given a voice to the loss we are suffering from our apathy towards Mother Nature.  This story is a reminder of how much we have already lost.

Thriller, an air of mystery and simple lessons make this a hard to put down the book. With solid reading, good story and relevant lessons, Whispers Of Trees is a good summer read.

(I received a copy of the book from Beach Bound Books and this is my honest, unbiased review.)
