 Book Review

Pretty Anand Nagar and wise Shastri ji together make a beautiful place to live. Kaveri, Jamuna & Ganga are the beautiful ladies there and Kalia the crow is the villain of the story. Raja the Brave rooster who helps them as evil threatens.

A story about being strong in the face of adversity, bravery, keeping faith and perseverance. The strength of family and how a mother’s love is so much stronger than we know.

The story book has colour pictures made with crayons and presents a different view for the children, almost as if a child has made them as he read the story; inspiring many children to try and copy the pictures and makes some for themselves.

My 5 year old enjoyed the pictures and the story and understood the bravery of the chickens. We could easily relate the plight of the chickens to humans and how we face evil in different ways in our lives.

A simple and sweet story for children but I felt a few lines could have been written in smaller simple sentences for ease of children – the intended audience of this book.

Overall the story also gives a view of India and a good lesson as well as a encouraging story.

About the Author & Illustrator:

Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata Kommuru
Subhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.

Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea!

These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.
