Jamming in January

That’s me sitting like a speck in the lap of Mother Nature in Lachung, Sikkim.

The new year, the new month and the new possibilities!

January has it all, but it also brings along the old tasks, responsibilities and the things that need to be done. January just makes us feel that we can do it all. I wish that this feeling of joy and hope carries us through 2025.

No one can deny the power of the New Year and the new month as it recharges us for the year ahead.

I too am recharged by the holiday I took from 20th of Dec till 5th Jan. It was the longest break of the year and should keep me going till the summer holidays.

The past year was good and I managed to read a bit more than 2023 which is a great win in my mind. I’ll post the reading update next with my favourite and most useful reads of 2024.

I even managed the minor health issues that plagued me last year as they seem to be under control now with diet and lifestyle changes.

My kid has boards this year so expect more random silences and sporadic posts from my continuously ‘Please study, Beta’ chanting brain!

At the Lachung River in Lachung, Sikkim

I’ve been up in the mountains, at the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling and in North Sikkim.

I carried books to read on a family vacation 😀 but no one let me read much! Why am I not surprised 😉

I finished an audiobook on writing called Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg I was listening to and it was the last book of 2024 while the book on Darjeeling was the first book of 2025.

Since last year, I’ve been reading Everything The Light Touches by Janice Pariat on my phone, Kindle and from the hardcover book loaned by a friend months ago. I’m determined to finish the book this month since I’ve been reading it since last year.

Coming back in January also landed us right into the pre-boards and it was chaotic, to say the least. Ignoring everything else except studies and food we managed and today is a break for the weekend before the runup to the finals.

Except for Lohri when we had a mini celebration at home with a bonfire in an old flower pot. Recycle and reuse at its finest since I used broken wood from an old box.

A mini Lohri celebration at home.

Till further notice, I am now an on-demand cook and mother who only panders to her child ignoring the rest of the world. At least till the boards finish though ordering out does help uplift my mood as well.

What did I cook, you wonder? I’ll tell you no, worries!

I made Nuts and Seeds Protein Pinnies or Laddoos for the winter and Focaccia Bread with a recipe from Natashaskitchen.com The bread turned out so well that I’ve already made it twice. Natasha’s recipe is fool-proof, go ahead and try it!

All those who ate them have been asking about the ingredients so on popular demand, I’ll post the recipe for these Nuts and Seeds Protein Pinnies soon on the blog since the last one I posted was about homemade chicken the way my grandma taught me.

For the year’s end and the new year, I mostly enjoyed the sunny days of Darjeeling and a few icy, windy days at Lachung.

Hope you have a peaceful and relaxed time as well.

January has been gentle though the cold has been biting and I can’t wait for the summer to arrive. Winter always makes me tired and cranky but being with a good book always helps.

Nowadays along with Janice’s book, I am reading the ebook of Games & Rituals. It is a good collection of short stories. Check it out! Games and Rituals: A funny and heartwarming literary fiction book to brighten your day by Katherine Heiny

What is the book you are reading in January to start your year?

Blogposts like these are the best. So full of news. First up, I love Janice Pariat. I had the good fortune of listening to her speak and she’s a delight. I’ve read Nine-chambered heart but have to get to this one. I’m glad you could manage a holiday. Boards are tough on the entire family. Good to luck to both mama and bachcha! I’m not too good in the kitchen. I’ve proved that with many ‘fool-proof’ recipes but that doesn’t stop me from trying :-). Will give this one a try too. Also, waiting for the laddoo recipe.

Love the picture of you in Sikkim. I feel relaxed reading about your lovely vacation. All the best for your child’s board exams. Thanks for sharing the food post also.
