The Marshalls: Loyalty Is Thicker Than Blood

Present
It was a bright and sunny afternoon at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The crowd is cheering for their Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team as Bray Marshall threw the game winning pass to a wide receiver in the end zone with only a few seconds left in the game which broke the tie. Bray’s teammates carried him off the field in victory while the photographers took pictures and the reporters asking a million and one questions.
Bray is the best college quarterback in the country. He’s a junior with a 4.0 GPA and a journalism major. NFL scouts have taken a great interest in him. Playing in the NFL had been Bray’s dream since he was in kindergarten. His backup career is in sports journalism.
After getting away from the press Bray took a quick shower and put on his black suit for the press conference. He took the podium and gave his speech, “It was a tough game, but we pulled it out. I was nervous about the last play, but I took a chance. I would like to thank Coach Williams and my teammates for their support and motivation. It’s going to be a long and challenging road to the championship, but with hard work and determination we can make it happen. Most importantly I want to thank my family for being there for me since day one. My mother Moselle for being the best mother in the world. My grandmother Eloise for teaching me the importance of family unity and loyalty. My uncles Rocco and Phoenix for being strong father figures in my life. My Aunt Skyla for being like a big sister to me. Aunt Bella for being a wonderful wife to my Uncle Rocco and their lovely twin daughters Rose and Violet. Together they demonstrated that with the foundation of love, loyalty and family anything is possible. Thanks you guys,” After Bray’s speech he got a standing ovation.
He left the podium and went into the audience to find his family. They never miss any of his home games. The first person he found was Moselle. “Thanks momma!”
“Congratulations baby! I love you!” Moselle said before she gave Bray a kiss on the cheek.
The next person he hugged was Eloise, “Thanks grandma!”
“Bray baby!” Eloise said.
“Grandma did you…..”
“Boy, you know I always bring my legendary red velvet cupcakes for the team,” she said with a smile.
“Momma, no one can resist those things,” Phoenix said. He turned to Bray and said, “Congratulations my boy! You nailed it!”
“Thanks Uncle Phoenix!” Bray said as he shook his hand. “What’s up Uncle Rocco!” He greeted as he shook his hand.
“Way to go boy!” Rocco said.
“That game was scary,” Bella added, “But as usual you pulled it out. That was a lovely speech.”
“Thanks Aunt Bella!” Bray said as he hugged her.
“Bray! Bray! Yay! Yay!” Rose and Violet cheered.
“Aww my little cheerleaders! Group hug!” Bray said as he hugged his ten year old twin cousins. Bray glanced at Skyla who gave him a ‘boy I know you not about to forget about me’ look. “Aunt Skyla you know I wasn’t going to forget you.”
“I know you know better,” Skyla said with a playful attitude. “Now get over here and give me a hug, Bugs.” Skyla is the only person that calls Bray that. That name kind of stuck after Moselle found out that she was having a boy. Skyla dropped the ‘Bunny’ part when Bray was born. “Where do you want to eat?”
“Oh we’re not going out to eat. I already have a meal prepared at the house,” Eloise informed.
“Really momma?” Rocco asked.
“Yes I did. I cooked all of Bray’s favorites and of course some red velvet cupcakes.”
“Thanks grandma,” Bray said as he hugged Eloise, “are you sure that it’s not any trouble?”
“Boy, you know how much I love to cook and great at it,” Eloise responded with a laugh, “Dinner is ready. The coach and the team have their cupcakes. With that being said we can head to the house.”
“Whatever you say momma,” Moselle said as everyone headed to Eloise’s house for dinner.
The Lesson
“You’re not coming with me!” Cyrus yelled when he was about to go over to a friend’s house.
“I’ve been at the house all day alone! I want to spend time with my man!” Hope yelled back.
“You should’ve spent that time looking for a job instead of sitting around doing nothing!” Cyrus shot back.
Hope couldn’t believe her ears. “Doing nothing? Doing nothing! I cook. I clean. I try to look my best for you and it’s not enough for you! I know I have a slight weight problem and for the last time, the reason I don’t have a job is because Stewart’s Diner closed! It’s hard out there!” Hope was a waitress at Stewart’s Diner before it closed down two months ago. Cyrus tried to be patient and understanding due to the economic situation, but his patience was getting thin. He can’t financially support Hope and pay all the bills forever. The only bright side is even though it’s not much Hope does get unemployment.
“Listen, I understand all of that. I appreciate everything you do around here, but this clinginess needs to stop!” Cyrus demanded.
Hope sighed, “I’m not clingy! I just want to spend time with the man I love! What the fuck is wrong with that! Oh, nevermind! It’s okay! It’s fine! Go do what you want!” Hope stormed off in the bedroom and slammed the door. Cyrus followed suit and stormed out of the apartment.
On his way to his friend’s house he was wondering was this almost six year relationship worth it. He loves Hope. She’s beautiful, sexy, fun, exciting and the sex is out of this world. She’s also very open to try new things. She’s also 100% loyal and loves him unconditionally, which is very difficult to find these days.
He knows she’s frustrated about being jobless, but her moping is getting on his last nerve. He’s trying to be patient, but it’s getting difficult. He knows that Hope has had a difficult and painful past which causes her to be insecure at times. A family member molested her when she was seven years old. At eight her father abandoned the family for another woman and she never saw him again. In middle school, she was bullied so severely to the point that she had to transfer schools. When she was thirteen, her social studies teacher fondled her. When she started her freshman year of high school she fell in love with a senior who was a football player. He said he loved her and took her virginity. He dumped her the next day.
At sixteen she met her high school sweetheart. Everything was perfect until her
senior prom. She caught him having sex with the star of the men’s basketball team. The whole relationship was just a front plan for them to cover up their homosexuality.
After high school she attended Baker University. She worked for the athletics department. She was seduced by the defensive coordinator for the football team. He grew jealous when he saw Hope talking to a football player and got in his car. In actuality he was her roommate’s boyfriend and Hope’s lab partner. He was nice enough to drive her back to her room, plus he was going there anyway. The coach ambushed Hope in the equipment room and confronted her about it. She explained what happened but he didn’t believe her. He called her a lying bitch and punched her. He beat her up before raping her. Hope was so traumatized to the point that she transferred to the student affairs office. Later she found out that she was pregnant. She ended up getting an abortion.
The coach ended up resigning when the news broke out about him raping three other girls. The next year she met Cyrus when they were paired up for an assignment for American Government. The rest is history.
Hope and Cyrus have the same free-spirited attitude and both of them want to become teachers. Cyrus is at Baker getting his Masters. He’s also a Professor’s Assistant and a tutor. He wants to become a Pre-Calculus Professor. Hope received her teacher’s certification a month before the diner closed. Due to the tough economy and her past, Cyrus is trying to be supportive. But seriously, how much can one man take?
Unrestricted Chains
Damn! I really hope that Michael is okay. It’s been three days, and I still haven’t made up my mind about visiting him. I’m so confused: I never wanted Michael to get hurt or get killed, but I’m still pissed at him.
I go outside, and I see the female guard that Johnny said rescued Michael and walked up to her. “Hi,” she greeted. Oh, she’s friendly. That’s good.
“I just wanted to thank you for saving my brother,” I said.
“Oh, so I was right,” she said. “And you’re welcome.”
I raise an eyebrow in confusion. “What do you mean?”
“I had guessed that y’all were brothers,” she said. “I also noticed that you two are not very close. Do you want to talk about it?”
Let’s see friendly, smart, beautiful and compassionate. I’m starting to like her more. I told her my tale of woe and my conflict about visiting Michael. She was actually
apologetic and sympathetic. It’s official. I like her.
“Look,” she said, “I know you’re pissed at Michael, but he really needs you.
Especially now more than ever. At least try to make amends, or meet him halfway.” She sounds like Johnny… “I know you care about him. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t have thanked me for rescuing him.”
“Okay. I’ll think about it,” I said. “By the way, my name is Dewayne.”
She shakes my hand and says, “Appolonia. You seem like a really cool person, and I’ll look after you and your brother and take care of y’all.”
I said, “Thanks for saving my brother and offering your support. I’m so happy. How can I ever thank you?”
Appolonia says, “By taking your happy ass to the infirmary and be by your brother’s side.”
Hmmm… And she has a little spice in her. I like that in a woman. This chick is amazing. I just might visit Michael after all.
