Author Answers’ Shilpa Suraj on Rescued By Love

There is no greater satisfaction for a reader than to learn about what makes their favourite author tap away at the keyboard churning out yet another best seller. The insights about their author and their writing quirks as well as a few gems of writing wisdom along the way is pure delight.
The lady writes like a dream, her books are the epitome of what a perfect Mills & Boon must be like. Her prose is so effortless, the writing so smooth and in tune with the style of today. Her works echo the times and tales of our today and spin stories with heroes that make us swoon and drool!!

I have the pleasure of having on my blog; the beautiful, gracious, and a true believer in the power of love; Harlequin published author Shilpa Suraj.
Welcome to the blog, Shilpa.

Indy: What has been your motivation for writing this book Rescued By Love and the story for your first book The Girl He Left Behind?
Shilpa:The story of ‘The Girl He Left Behind’ had been floating around in my head for years. I never got around to penning it though until my husband was based in Chennai for a six-month work sojourn, almost immediately after we got married. Deciding to enjoy my new-bride status to the hilt, I took a sabbatical from work and tagged along. Finding myself with an unexpected block of free time, I sat down and started to write and quite simply haven’t stopped since.

The motivation for ‘Rescued by Love’ came from Arjun. He strolled full-blown into my head and after falling a little in love with him, I wrote him a heroine to turn his well-ordered, structured life upside down. I think Naina is a far better match for him than I am. (The last bit was said with a wistful sigh)
Indy: The cover is worth a thousand words, how much of the cover did you choose or was it designed by someone else?
Shilpa:Both covers were designed by the amazing team at Harlequin India. They were sent to me for feedback and I confess I loved both of them. They are my babies after all.
Indy: Give us three “Good to Know” facts about you. Be creative.
Shilpa:The first time I cooked, I gave everyone at the table a mild bout of food poisoning. I have improved since then but I still urge you to approach any invitations to a meal at my home with caution.
I do almost all of my writing at night. I rarely sleep before 3 AM and am always up by 7 AM to deal with the part of my life that doesn’t pertain to writing. My faint resemblance to a panda is not a coincidence!
If you talk to me before my first humongous morning mug of tea, I will growl. I promise.
Indy: If you could cast your characters in the Bollywood adaptation of your book, who would play your characters?
Shilpa:For me, Hrithik Roshan from the second half of Lakshya would be a great fit for Arjun. The intensity in those gorgeous eyes of his has me sighing every time I watch him on screen.
For Naina, I like Alia Bhatt. There is an impishness to her on screen which fits perfectly with Naina’s personality.
Indy: How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names Arjun and Naina based on liking the way it sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
Shilpa:Names are very important when you’re visualizing a character. I choose names purely on instinct. I toy with a few options until I find one that fits the personality of the character in my head. I’ve never been big on the meanings of names. When I meet someone, I say, ‘Hi. I’m Shilpa.’ I definitely don’t say, ‘Hi. I’m Shilpa, aka Sculpture.’ Also, the less fancy meaning for my name is ‘Stone.’
Indy: What is your most important advice for aspiring authors?
Shilpa:Write. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect mood to get down to it. Nobody else can tell the story floating around in your head. Only you can.
Thank you Shilpa for sharing such wonderful insights about you book. It was a delight to chat with you. I wish you many, many more best sellers ahead. I am eager to read countless more of your books.
