Old Love, Old Charm THE THORN BIRDS

The Thorn BirdsThe Thorn Birds

by Colleen McCullough

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This one is for keeps! The book is so old, in fact it was old when I read it but still it managed to find a place in my heart. The reason I am reviewing this book now is to share a masterpiece with a generation that has lost the art of reading and finds writing a tweet to be part of literature.

It was published more than 25 years ago in 1977 and it will still resonate within the hearts of lovers of romance. You need to read if to know how love can be both liberating and binding. It is a story of love, longing & loss.

The naive romance that Meggie thinks will be enough for her, the ambition that drives Father Ralph and the intertwined stories of the other characters all make for an absorbing read.
Even though you know how it is going to end – after all the name of the book hints at the melancholy that will follow you will read The Thorn Birds with rapt attention.

The book is a must read for all lovers of historical romance and set in Australia it has some great visualisation transporting you to a different world. It is much like the recent movie “Australia”.

I suggest that we revisit it once again and be reminded of the simple days and simple lives.
