5 Things I Hate About Winter

ice-frozen

Winter you say, how can anyone hate it, let alone dislike it? Well, I can and I do. Given the chance, I would move to warmer climes today itself – packing be damned. Since the past couple of days as North India reels under a solid cold wave and snow captured many places, winter was lamented from the unlikeliest of places.

Twitter was flooded with tweets of people trolling Mumbai and its residents for feeling cold is when it is never really cold there. I for one totally understand the sentiments since I just dislike the cold so much. I rather do without the superb Silk and Pashmina to happily live in my cotton and muslin.

As I write this I am wrapped up in thermals, followed by two layers, a woolen cap, and a jacket. Yes, my hubby is smirking in his track suit as I type this with the blower on full under my table.  Another reason I dislike winters, even expressions get frozen in this cold!

CLOTHES OVERLOAD – Clothes are everywhere and so many of them, that they are so bulky is an added advantage. They are hard to miss! It is so hard to move and maneuver around in them and yet we have to do more work in winters. plus, the house is full of them, washing, folding and storing. I need double the space of summers to stack less than half the winter stock.

COLD, REAL COLD – That I visited one of the coldest places in India recently (Durbuk- more in another post soon.) does not mean I am immune to it, in fact now I feel it even more. how I wish for central heating. The freezing, biting wind that pinches my ears and makes my head ache, relentlessly as I venture out.

MISSING THE SUN – The slow, foggy, shady days that start with the blind freezing mornings leading to if I am lucky to a little bit of watered down sunlight. I love the Sun and to sit and soak up the golden rays is the best experience ever, reading a good book while doing that is even better. Gurgaon or Gurugram as it likes to be called now, sadly has very few good, sunny winter days. A weak, dull Sun that makes me feel as if the world is coming to an end is no mood uplifter!

TOO MUCH TO EAT – Each season I vow to try and restrict sumptuous food  (read fattening, fun, yummy) yet winter put a spanner in my efforts like no other time. it is cold, sitting idle covered with little else to do all I think of is hot soup, food and lots of fried food.

SAD – This winter has been exceptional in its ‘sad’ content. Many people around me have suffered from it. Another reason to love the summers.  SAD is Seasonal Affective Disorder. It is a type of depression that affects people around the same time every year and it generally starts during autumn and lasts into winter. Symptoms include depressions, feelings of hopelessness, feelings of heaviness in your limbs, weight gain and loss of interest in things you once enjoyed.

On top of it all the pressure to get your body summer ready!! Hell!! I got only one body and it does not have replaceable parts. That tire I got in winter ain’t going anywhere soon. But I am going everywhere, it’s the only way to beat these seasons.

What do you do to enjoy winter?

Do you like winter?

Which is your favorite season?

Strategies to beat the cold?

What is your favorite winter food?

I enjoy the Kinnow or the Clementines, the Orange like fruit that is only ten times sweeter. And of course my non-vegetarian food 😉

I feel exactly the same as you do! Winter is misery for me also. It takes forever to bundle up to go outside and no matter how many layers are on, I still freeze. This morning was ridiculously cold – MINUS 17C. Here’s hoping for an early spring!

We Mumbai folks can never really empathize with what you are feeling! That said, I don’t think I’ll be very happy either if the weather was bleak and freezing for long periods of time. The shorter days as it is are disconcerting. Sending across warm vibes from Mumbai! And yes winter food is the yummiest!

Couldnt agree more with you .You have listed everything that I detest about winter.

A slight chill in the air; a light sweater or shawl and a cup of Hit cocoa / gingertea with n endless supply of fried snacks is my idea of cosy winter days. .But the winters in North India are any thing but that. The biting cold ; days at end without the sun coming out; Laundty that never seems to dry are some of my winter woes. And this yr the rains only seem to make it worse.

A Mumbai girl who once didn’t know anything abt ” warm suits” and ” Thermals/ Inners” ; today i have everything in my arsenal to combat the freezing winters.

Such a cute post this is, Indy! Enjoyed reading it!:)

I was born and grew up in Bombay, where 23 degrees was our excuse for winter!:) Moved to Bangalore 3 years ago and got to experience true Winter, and truth be known I am quite enjoying it!:)

When I lived in Bombay, winter used to be my favourite season as it was always pleasant. However, since moving to Sydney, I am not a fan of winters. Sure, it doesn’t snow but it can get down to single digits and that’s bad enough for me. I do like wearing tights and boots in winter though so that’s the only plus!

I have heard the weather is good in Australia and some areas have mild winters. Bombay is a breeze compared to Delhi/Gurgaon winter. The boots look so hot in winters, I like them as well. Keep the toes from freezing. 🙂 Thanks for visiting, Sanchie.

Inderpreet agree with you. Yet wo ter still remains m favourite season. I love the warmth of athe thick blanket and the quietness that is associated with he season
I hate the summer heat and the constant sweating which makes me so tired.

I like winters and I can say so cos I had experience any in Bangalore. I can stand heat but I can survive cold. Food and clothes overload is there but it still keeps us warm inside out. Isn’t it? 🙂
    Fun post!

Aww! I quite like winters – they’re so much better than Delhi summers for one!! I also enjoy the winter food indulgence, and then look forward to the lighter, fresher summer fare! (Although when I first moved to Delhi, I was singing a completely different tune) 😉

I enjoy winters provided it is a sunny day. The gloomy days are a total no-no. The last few days have been really sick and I just want the winters to be gone. Clothes and the blankets are the things I most despise about winters. Plus the kids falling sick more often. I try and keep myself busy doing more work to beat the cold. But the fingers and toes need the blower all the time. I sincerely hope that it doesn’t get any colder than this. Done for this season.

Ah! You have echoed my sentiments. Thank god, the Sun has come out today and another few days and we should be complaining about the heat :p Thanks, Rekha.

You said it! I *hate* winters!! So gloomy, with all your teeth chattering and everything. I remember as a child, growing up in New Delhi, during winters, I used to wear ten sweaters at a time! And even now, I am more sensitive to cold than those around me.
All that food looks yummy though 😛

Hmm…I get you. Although I prefer cooler climes, I think I won’t be happy at a place that has extreme weather conditions. Living in Bangalore has spoilt me for experiencing lovely weather for the most part of the year yet when it’s gloomy and cloudy I feel the sadness creeping in so I understand. Hope the weather gets warmer for you, Indy 🙂

*shivers* I was never a winter person when I was in Germany. I feel cold really easily, so I used to look like an onion with ten layers. 😀 The only thing I ever liked was curling up with a hot chocolate and a good book and just shutting everything out.

Haha! 10 layers, I can understand. I feel like that here. I end up in my quilt with the blower at full most days. Thanks for stopping by, Devika. 🙂
